Ready Formula or Custom Formula? Choosing Your Route with a Custom Formula Skincare Manufacturer

Ready formula or custom development? Compare both routes on budget, timing, differentiation and claims, then learn how to write a brief and judge lab samples.

Once you have decided to manufacture, the next question is which development route to take. You can choose a finished formula from a manufacturer’s library and brand it as your own, or work with a custom formula skincare manufacturer to develop something new from your concept. There is also a middle path between the two.

This is the classic private label vs custom formulation decision. The right answer depends on your budget, launch date, how different the product must be, the claims you want and where you will sell.

What a Ready Formula Is (and Isn’t)

A ready formula is already developed and production-ready. At Hansolbio, ready formulas are completed, stability-tested formulations across skincare, hair, body and lip, ready for fast launch. You choose a formula, select from the compatible packaging shown on its page, and add your branding.

That usually makes ready-to-brand skincare formulas the fastest, most predictable route to market, especially for a first product or a test launch.

A ready formula is not:

  • Automatically exclusive. Exclusivity is something to discuss and agree on in writing, not assume.
  • A set of ready-made claims. In the US, FDA does not have a list of approved or accepted claims for cosmetics, and claims must be truthful and not misleading. What you can say depends on evidence for the finished product and each market’s rules.
  • Fixed. Ingredients, fragrance, color, texture and claims may be adjusted depending on project requirements.

What Custom Formula Development Involves

Custom cosmetic formulation starts from your idea rather than an existing formula. Hansolbio’s custom formulas are tailored to your ingredients, texture, claims and target market. Custom projects generally move through these stages:

  1. Brief: customer, market, hero ingredients, texture and claims.
  2. Feasibility: a check that the concept is technically realistic for your markets.
  3. Lab samples: you test and give feedback over one or more rounds.
  4. Stabilization: the formula is matured and stabilized into a robust formulation built for export shelf life.
  5. Approval: you approve the final sample before production.

The reward is differentiation. The trade-off is more decisions, more time and, often, more cost before the first order.

How to Choose: Five Criteria

  • Budget and MOQ. A ready formula involves little upfront development work; a custom one may need special raw materials with their own supplier minimums, which can raise the first order. Our guide to MOQ in cosmetics OEM/ODM explains how formula and packaging minimums combine.
  • Time to market. If your launch date is fixed, a ready formula reduces the uncertainty. Custom work adds sampling and feedback rounds.
  • Differentiation. If your brand depends on a product nobody else sells, go custom. If your difference lies in branding, packaging, price or channel, a ready formula may be enough.
  • Claims ambition. Some claims change the regulatory route. Korean law recognizes 11 types of functional cosmetics, including whitening, wrinkle improvement, UV protection and hair-loss symptom relief, and functional status is granted product by product through MFDS review or report. In the US, intended use decides whether a product is a cosmetic, a drug or both; a moisturizer marketed with sun-protection claims, for example, must meet the requirements for both. Such claims require testing or registration in the target market. Hansolbio formulations can undergo efficacy and clinical testing where required to support product claims.
  • Target-market rules. Permitted ingredients differ by market; Japan, for example, has its own Standards for Cosmetics. Name every market up front, and confirm current rules with the authority or a regulatory consultant. Hansolbio supports market entry across 71+ countries, including FDA (US), PMDA (Japan) and CPNP (EU) requirements.

For example, a skin clinic adding a calming cream to its retail shelf may simply choose a ready-made gel cream, brand it and launch quickly. A brand building a signature PDRN line wants control over ingredient source and level, texture and claims per market, which points to custom development.

The Hybrid Route: Customize a Ready Formula

The middle path is to start from a ready formula and adjust it, for example:

  • A new scent from Hansolbio’s exclusive French fragrance library with niche-grade signature blending
  • A different color or a lighter or richer texture
  • An added or swapped hero ingredient
  • Revised claim wording, subject to evidence and market rules

A hybrid is often enough when your difference is sensory or brand-led rather than technical. Each change may need fresh stability and compatibility checks, so keep adjustments few and deliberate.

How to Write a Brief for a Custom Formula Skincare Manufacturer

Hansolbio asks buyers to share their formulation interest, sales channel and target volume. A strong custom skincare formula brief also covers:

  • Customer and markets: who it is for and every country where you will sell
  • Hero ingredients: with INCI names if you know them, plus anything to avoid
  • Texture, finish and scent: for example, a light gel with a dewy finish
  • Claims wanted: per market, so the team can flag what needs testing or registration
  • Packaging: format and dispenser; your own packaging is possible after a compatibility and production-suitability assessment
  • Price and volume: target retail price, first order and annual volume
  • Certifications: for example, vegan certification, available for eligible formulations

How to Evaluate Cosmetic Samples from a Manufacturer

Samples can be requested directly from each formulation’s product page, so you can compare candidates side by side. Score each one on the same points:

  • Texture and finish: spread, after-feel a few minutes later, and a matte, satin or dewy finish
  • Scent: strength, character and how it changes on skin
  • Packaging fit: whether the texture suits your pump, tube or dropper
  • Small user panel: reactions from a few people who match your target customer

A sample cannot show how the formula behaves over its full shelf life in final packaging; that takes stability and compatibility testing. Nor does a positive panel substantiate a claim. Under the EU’s common criteria for cosmetic claims, for example, claims need evidential support, and a product must not be implied to have an ingredient’s properties when it does not.

To shorten the next round, send one consolidated set of feedback, be specific (“less tacky after two minutes,” not “make it better”), rank your priorities, and change few variables per round.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does custom development take?

Hansolbio’s FAQ puts development at generally 1–2 weeks; custom formulas may take up to 3 weeks. Production at Hansolbio generally takes 6–10 weeks after formula approval, packaging confirmation and deposit. Allow extra time for sample feedback, claim testing and market registration.

Can I change the fragrance of a ready formula?

Yes. Fragrance may be adjusted depending on project requirements, along with ingredients, color, texture and claims.

Can a ready formula be exclusive?

Ask before you commit. For Hansolbio’s ready-to-launch concepts, exclusivity may be available depending on the project scope and commercial agreement. If exclusivity matters for a formula, raise it early and agree on exclusivity and formula ownership terms in writing.

How many samples can I request?

At Hansolbio, one order includes up to 5 pieces of formulation in R&D sample bottles (10–20 g), and you can add more as needed.

Final Thoughts

A ready formula gets a credible product to market quickly and with less risk; custom development pays off when you know exactly what makes your product different.

A practical path is to do both: launch with a ready or lightly customized formula, learn from real sales, then brief custom development for the next product with data, not guesswork.
