He ran before sunrise, and by the time the light came up he was the light.
The opening is a hillside at dawn: aromatic herbs, sharp and green, laurel-like and faintly peppery, with a cool fruit note running through them, crisp rather than sweet, closer to a bitten apple or a green fig than to anything ripe. As the sun climbs the woods come forward, pale and dry, cedar-clean, and the herbs settle into them like heat into stone. The fruit stays, a bright thread through the middle of the day, keeping the composition lifted. The dry-down is clean, radiant and quietly athletic, the smell of skin after exercise and a linen shirt afterwards. He was gone by the time you reached the top. His scent had waited for you.
