You see the colour of the sky change before you smell anything, and by then it is too late to close the shutters.
Some winds you can see coming. This one arrives as orris first, cool and powdery, the colour of dust before it has decided to be a storm. The horizon goes soft; the light turns the grey of unfired clay. Then the gaiac, smoky, faintly rosy, like tea and warm wood, the smell of a room in a caravanserai where a fire was lit an hour ago. Windows are shuttered. Sand finds its way in anyway. Underneath it all, Ambronova opens: a dry, mineral amber that seems to radiate rather than smell, the warmth of a stone wall long after sunset. The traveller sits with his back to it and waits for the wind to finish its argument with the door. It does not finish. By morning the road will be somewhere else entirely.
