Nobody has raised their voice, which is exactly how you know the argument has started.
The line is drawn in elemi first: lemony, peppery, a resin that smells like a match struck in a cold room. Then the rose, but not a soft one, a rose oil with spice in it, the deep red of a pen pressed too hard. He is editing a manuscript at the kitchen table; she is reading over his shoulder, saying nothing, which is worse. Vetiver settles beneath both of them, rooty, smoky, faintly grapefruit-bitter, the smell of dry earth that has been disturbed. The argument they are not having fills the room more completely than any they could have. He crosses out a sentence. She puts her hand flat on the page. Neither of them will remember, afterwards, who spoke first, only that the window was open and the rose was still there in the morning.
