It smelled like nothing at all, until she left the room.
It opens quietly, with a faint, milky softness, a floral that is more texture than petal, pale and slightly powdery, like the steam rising off a bowl just uncovered. There is no drama in it; that is the point. The heart is musk, clean and skin-like, the kind that people describe as smelling like you, only better, and it holds the flowers close rather than projecting them across the room. In the dry-down a pale wood appears, smooth and dry, giving the softness a spine so that it lasts on cotton and hair for the whole day. It is the most quietly asked-about scent in any room. She never says what it is. She likes that they have to ask.
