She sliced the melon by the open window, and the garden came in.
It opens cold and clean: melon, watermelon rind, a cucumber-fresh wateriness that feels like the inside of a fruit rather than its skin. Green notes follow, crushed leaves and stems, sappy and bright, keeping the fruit from ever becoming sweet in a candied way. The heart is airy, a suggestion of delicate flowers seen through water, translucent and light. In the dry-down the freshness softens into a clean, soft trail, so that the scent stays on a cotton shirt like the memory of a tropical morning. It is the smell of a hotel breakfast on a terrace, of a bird you saw once and could not name, and of the person who leaned over to see it too.
