The flowers were cut this morning, but nobody in the house admits to it.
The opening is green, sharply so: crushed stems, leaves, the cold water in the bottom of the vase, with a fruity brightness that reads as sap rather than sugar. Then the flowers arrive in force. The heart is a full, luminous white floral, intense as the name promises, petals so fresh they still smell faintly of the garden. It fills the room without announcing itself. The dry-down is softer, a musky, slightly creamy floral trace on fabric and skin. She finds the vase on the hall table when she comes home. No note, no card. She checks the garden. The bed by the wall has been cut.
