The story

She bit into the peach knowing exactly what it would cost her.

The orchard is warm by ten in the morning. The opening is peach, unmistakably: velvet skin, sweet flesh, a little tartness where the fruit meets the stone. It is not syrup; it is the smell of fruit held close to the face before the first bite. The heart opens into soft florals, the sort that grow at the edge of an orchard rather than in a vase, with a milky roundness underneath. The dry-down is soft and skin-close, with a whisper of something lactonic, skin after fruit. She wipes her chin with the back of her hand and looks at the tree. There are plenty more. Nobody is watching.
