She opened the compact and the whole room remembered something.
The opening is a bright, fruity smile: red and orange fruit, juicy and a little sherbet-like, the sort of sweetness that fizzes for a second on the tongue. Then the powder falls. A soft floral heart, powdery and cosmetic, with the texture of a pressed compact opened for the first time. The edible side arrives in the dry-down, where the powder turns into something closer to sugared almond and vanilla marshmallow, sweet but never heavy, resting on a soft, skin-close base that stays on a cardigan until the next wash. It is the memory of a dressing table, of someone's mother getting ready to go out. And you never did find out where she went.
