It starts cold, like the touch of a marble mantelpiece, and then someone lights the fire.
You arrive early to a flat you have never seen, keys still warm from the estate agent's hand. The rooms are cool and bare; the air carries iris, the clean, powdery hush of Diviniris, like face powder on a marble sill. You run a palm along the mantel and it is smooth, almost damp. Then the sandalwood begins: creamy, milky, the first warmth of a room that has decided it will be lived in. By the time you reach the window the light has changed. Tonka settles in behind you, sweet as hay and almond, slow as an ember that refuses to go out. You had planned to stay ten minutes. You have already put down your bag. Somewhere a radiator ticks, and you realise you have not yet asked what the last tenant left behind.
