He steps out onto the roof as the call to prayer rises over the harbour, and the first thing on the air is saffron: leathery, bitter-sweet, faintly metallic, the smell of the threads before they touch water. It is a colour as much as a scent, the same deep orange as the sky over the water. Then the rose. Symrose, a captive molecule that carries the fresh, dewy heart of the flower without its thorns, blooms through the spice with a clarity that natural rose rarely allows, cool where the saffron is warm, so that the two seem to be arguing gently about the temperature of the evening. The light goes. Vetiver from Madagascar, distilled by Maison Lautier, comes up from the base like the earth giving back the day's heat: smoky, rooted, slightly sweet, drying down for hours on the skin. He does not go back inside.
