The rose is the last thing you notice, and the only thing you remember.
The incense is lit before she arrives. Olibanum, frankincense from the resin of Boswellia, fills the room with something cool and lemony and church-clean, a smoke that seems to rise rather than settle. She walks through it and the smoke changes shape. A dark rose accord unfolds against the resin: not fresh, not pink, but a rose at the end of its week, velvet-red, honeyed, faintly metallic, with the wine-and-leather depth of petals that have started to fall. It is beautiful and slightly dangerous, the way silk is when it catches on a thorn. The room empties. What is left on her skin, hours later, is musk, and not the clean sort: animalic, warm, a little dirty, the scent of a body that has been near incense and roses all night and has decided to keep both. Someone leans in. She lets them.
