It starts sweet, and then you notice the earth under your nails.
The brambles have grown over the path, and you go in anyway. Blackberry first: a burst of dark juice, tart and sugared, staining fingers, seeds against the teeth, with the green snap of the stem behind it. It is the sweetest the fragrance will ever be, and it lasts about as long as the fruit does in your hand. Then the ground. Patchouli oil from Madagascar, distilled by Maison Lautier, comes up from the roots, damp, earthy, camphorous at the edges, with the dark-chocolate warmth that only good patchouli has. It is not a clean smell, and it does not want to be. The dry-down is labdanum, the sticky resin of the cistus shrub, leathery, ambery, honeyed like the inside of a very old cupboard. The berry is a stain by now, the earth is on your skin. You leave the path looking like you have done something. You have.
