It rained on the tea gardens for exactly one hour, and then the whole hillside began to smell.
Spring rain in a tea garden does not fall so much as settle: a fine grey mist that leaves every leaf beaded and every path slick. The opening is sweet orange, simple and bright, the peel of the fruit someone has just eaten walking between the rows. Then the heart arrives, and it is where the fragrance lives. Jasmine sambac, captured by Vitessence, sits beside a green tea accord: the jasmine is dewy and slightly green, the tea is fresh, faintly umami, with the vegetal bite of a leaf just pulled from the bush. Together they are the smell of a garden the rain has just left. Beneath, guaiac wood, soft and smoked and a little sweet, is the wooden shed at the end of the row. The clouds lift. The pickers do not come back yet.
