The tea was never meant to be drunk, only to be smelled, and you are about to break that rule.
There is a kind of tea sold in spring that is more perfume than drink: leaf layered with flowers until the flowers are gone and only their memory remains. The opening is sweet orange, quick and sunny, the citrus in the bowl beside the pot. Then the heart opens on two things at once: a scented tea accord, floral and faintly honeyed, and jasmine absolute, rich and warm and a little animalic, the flower that did the scenting. For a moment the fragrance is all bloom. Then Ceylanil comes through, a tea-like note, dry and leafy, slightly astringent, pulling the composition back toward the cup. Under it, patchouli from Madagascar, earthy and green rather than dark. She lifts the lid and inhales before pouring. You wonder whether she will pour at all.
